Sogdians
Sogdia was located roughly across Kazakhstan, Tajikistan,
and Uzbekistan. The civilization existed from the 6th Century BC to the 11th century AD. The civilization
rose from the Achaemenid period, thrived through the Hellenistic period to the
Byzantine Empire. The Sogdians were Silk Road traders. Sogdiana was first
conquered by Cyrus the Great, the founder of the Achaemenid
Empire.
Cyrus the Great
Cyrus the Great was well known for founding the first Persian
Empire. While Alexander the Great gets credit for allowing the lands he
conquered to retain their customs and religions, Cyrus arguably established
this model several hundred years prior to Alexander’s conquering and expansion
of the Persian Empire. Cyrus was from Persis.
Persis
Roughly corresponds to the modern Iranian province of Fars. The
region is better known as “Persia” or “Old Persia.” One of the major capitols
of Persis was Persepolis.
Persepolis
Persepolis was the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid
Empire. It is the home of The Palace of One Hundred Pillars which remains stand
today. The Complex appears to be only ceremonial in nature and is believed to
be used for the celebration of the New Year held at the Spring Equinox.
